Setting sail or anchoring ashore? – A million dollar question

Choosing between a life at sea or a career on shore can be a tough decision. Each path presents its own set of challenges and rewards.

Whether you’re enticed by the thrill and freedom of sailing the open seas,

or prefer the stability and comfort of a land-based job.

Looking back, many of us were drawn to the industry by the allure of financial abundance and global travel opportunities. We aspired to climb the ranks, aiming to reach the pinnacle of becoming a chief engineer or captain within a relatively short time. Those were the ultimate achievements we sought.

But times have changed. The once abundant shore leaves have dwindled, replaced by shorter port stays and increased operations at anchorages. The pandemic has further impacted shore leave policies, making them stricter and more restrictive.

This shift has had a significant impact on seafarers, resulting in increased workloads, stress, and burnout. However, the unpredictability of the seafaring lifestyle remains the most persistent challenge.

Apart from pandemic, there is one issue that always follow seafarers. As life progresses and personal responsibilities arise, such as marriage and caring for family members, being away from home for six months at a time becomes a significant sacrifice. Missing important family moments and being unable to offer support during critical times can lead to regret and a longing for a more balanced life.

Ultimately, the decision rests with each individual. Prioritizing what matters most is key. Many seafarers choose to transition to shore-based jobs to spend more time with their families. However, it’s essential to consider the financial stability of a shore job and ensure it can meet your needs and obligations.

Unfortunately, for some seafarers, financial constraints and logistical challenges make securing a shore-based job difficult or impossible. Nevertheless, opportunities in shore-based careers have expanded in recent years, offering avenues for growth and progression.

The journey continues in the next chapter. Stay connected.”
