SAILORS UNITE

Transition Journey of Rohit: From Sailing to Sales, marketing & Business development

There are three kinds of people on the ship. One, who just loves sailing. The second, who doesn’t like it but continues to do it because they have no choice. And the third, who sooner identify that it’s better not to continue it if they are not happy.

Rohit was one of them. His story reflects the meaning of clarity and conviction. It will make you believe that no matter what the circumstances are, you ultimately hold the reins of control when you think with clarity. Let’s go through his journey.

It was the best day of my life when I got placed in one of the best shipping companies during my third year in college. As I completed my final year exams and gathered all the necessary official documents, I felt very close to my dream of sailing around the world. I still remember the date I embarked on my first ship. Everything seemed to fall into place perfectly.

As my voyage began, I knew it would be challenging, and I had initially embraced it with enthusiasm. However, as months passed, I began to realize that it was not something I would love to do continuously for the long term. That’s the unique thing about a sailing career—you truly understand it only once you’re out at sea, regardless of your technical knowledge or how well you were trained.  So, after completing my first and last contract, I returned with clarity that I would find something onshore related to my technical skills.

I began applying for multiple positions, and within a couple of months, I was fortunate to get a job at Dockyard in Dubai. I started as a mechanic but was soon promoted to the position of service engineer. I considered myself lucky to have the opportunity to work on tasks such as stern tube seal replacement and servicing bow thrusters, experiences that I might never have encountered while sailing.

Though the work at the Dock was challenging, with long hours sometimes necessary to meet tight deadlines before ships left port, I found myself enjoying it immensely. The stability at the shore and the attractive salary range were additional factors that made it even more appealing.

It was going smoothly for more than a year, but one day I received the devastating news that my father had passed away. While I was far away in Dubai, my family relied heavily on my father’s support. Now, without him, I knew I had to return to take care of my mother and sister. It was an emotional breakdown. To stabilize things financially, I began searching for a new job on land, but this time within the city, near my family.

Unaware that my career was about to take an interesting turn, I continued my job hunt. I went to a company to give an interview for the position of planned maintenance engineer but someone at the company prompted me to explore an option in sales and marketing as well. Both the roles were quite different – one was technical whereas the other focused on operations. I went through interviews for both positions and successfully cleared them. Then, with offers for both positions in hand, I had to choose one.

Despite the temptation of the technical role, I felt a strong conviction to embark on a new journey in sales & marketing. It was a choice that diverged from the norm, but I had a belief that it held immense promise for my future. As I reflect on my journey since 2014, I am filled with gratitude for the choices I made. Despite the challenges that followed, I listened to my inner voice.

I believe that no matter what circumstances we face, we ultimately hold the reins of control when we trust our instincts and pursue what truly resonates with us. I am grateful for every step that has led me to where I am today—loving every moment of it.
